Stingray skin has been treasured since its decorative uses in the earliest days of the Chinese Han dynasty. In the seventeenth century, Europe began importing the exotic skins from Asia; Mme. de Pompadour became a frequent collector of what was soon to be called shagreen. These days, with the species threatened, a new highly sought-after art form has emerged in creating faux shagreen.
Artisans cast resin on a vintage skin and then painstakingly mold it to achieve the exact feel of natural stingray. We showcase the result atop base as striking as the top, made carefully crafted iron. We distressed it in our own patina formulation - after considering thousands of iron swatches - to reveal charcoal undertones. The seams are referencing the pattern of stingray skin application. We like to think a modern Mme. de Pompadour would prize it as the highlight of her sitting room.
